Bears 27, Colts 17, 4:35 left in the third quarter

Just got a text informing me that I called this the third "inning" in the header. Preseason for me, too. Kick returned to the 32. Incomplete pass by Sorgi. There was a cutaway to a fan wearing a half-Urlacher, half-Freeney jersey, the No. 9 from Freeney's 93 and the No. 4 from Urlachers' 54. The name on the back says "Urleeney." Keith cuts back and does a little video-game running around in the backfield and gains four yards. Encroachment makes it 3rd and 1 on the Colts' 41. Sorgi goes up the right side to Trent Shelton and Corey Graham does a great job keeping his eye on the ball, not on the defender, and lunging to make a clean deflection. Punt is caught fairly by Berrian at the 17.

Make it the 18 as Wolfe slithers through some would-be tacklers to get the first down at the 29. Wolfe gets a couple and he's looking pretty good right now. In that Haugh article I linked to three drives ago, he said depth at running back is the only question mark, but today the three running backs have been solid, if unspectacular. Incomplete pass over the middle, if it was caught it would have been a great catch, if it were anywhere other than where it was thrown it would have been in danger of being picked. This followed up by a great throw and great catch by Orton and Mike Hass, respectively, gets the Bears to 1st and 10 at the Colts' 43. Just as Tirico says he can't think of a team with better depth at quarterback than the Bears, Orton gets sacked back to midfield. Tindard Davis (sure) then jumps an Orton route and comes a pair of bad hands away from having a touchdown. Orton dumps off to Wolfe, who gets 11 to close the gap on 4th down.

Punt goes out of bounds at the 11.

Josh Betts out of Miami (Ohio), an undrafted free agent, now calling the signals for the Colts. Ah, preseason. He hits Trent Shelton for a first down to the 28. He then hits someone else for another first down. Like the detail? I knew that you did. Clifton Dawson gets no gain, 2nd and 10 from the Colts' 46. Pass goes high and Brandon McGowan not only nails the receiver, but almost picks it off. Betts gets it right this time, throwing a pick to Corey Graham, who returns it up the sideline to the 32, from where Wolfe gets no gain.

One more play happens before Orton is sacked for a big loss, the punt is muffed in the red zone, but I think the Colts recovered. They did. Three yards for whichever running back is in right now, 2nd and 7 from the 6. Bryan Fletcher is injured, timeout. Seriously? Get him off the field and keep the game going. Betts hits Shelton for a first down, then sails a pass, 2nd and 10 from the 28. A run and a pass get a first down to the 40, then Betts goes deep and it's broken up by Tim Mixon, good work by him, an undrafted free agent out of Cal. We're going to commercial, I guess for the seven-minute warning. Six-yard pass and a five-yard pass make for a first down in Bears' territory. Another pass to the Bears' 39, 2nd and 1. Betts hits Shelton for another first down to the Bears' 25, then it falls incomplete in the end zone. Betts gets popped as he throws and the quail he chucked up is picked off by Tim Mixon, who's played a good series here.

Unbearleavable, you ask, the Bears answer. Chris Leak is in, hands off and the running back (not sure who) gets a few. Plenty of good seats available right now, and they're interviewing Dwight Freeney, so I can't catch the running back's number 'cause they cut away too quickly as it's now 3rd and 4. Drisan James drops a slant from Leak. Punt fielded at the 42 and the return is non-existent. Dave Toub got to his guys over the past nine days. Kick coverage has been what we're used to.

DeDe Dorsey breaks through a couple of tackles on a dump-off and isn't brought down until the Bears' 35. More DeDe and he gets seven to the 28, then a pass to Gijon Robinson gets the first down. This just in, Michael Vick has copped a plea. Let's talk about it more. A first down run is followed by Betts finding a wide-open Craphonso Thorpe in the back corner of the end zone. Vinatieri back in and hits the PAT.

Bears 27, Colts 24, 2:01 left in the game

Bears are expecting the onside kick this time, but it's a pooch kickoff instead and Greg Fassitt covers it up. Chris Leak takes some knees and we're done.

Final: Bears 27, Colts 24

Final thoughts: I think Kevin Payne may make me feel comfortable with letting Chris Harris go. Rex Grossman, well, yikes. Brian Griese and Kyle Orton played well, and that does not bode well for the whole "Rex is our quarterback" problem the Bears had last year. However, Cedric Benson, Adrian Peterson and Garrett Wolfe are continuing to assuage fears about running back depth. The big one, preseason game No. 3, is Saturday, join me at 7 p.m. as the Bears kick off the Soldier Field season against the 49ers.
