HAMMOND, Ind. -
Gregory Brooks Jr. and Reo Thompson are returning home to Northwest Indiana today in leg-irons. The teenagers already face burglary, robbery, containment and auto theft charges, in connection to the murders of Waymon & Ruby McClendon. The elderly couple were found shot to death last week.
And while murder charges have not yet been filed, there's little doubt that police intend to add that to the teen's growing rap sheets.
Hammond police are continuing to search for clues, meticulously looking for details that will show exactly what happened to Waymon & Ruby McClendon.
Investigators say the suspects admitted to hatching a robbery plan, devising a ruse that they were having car trouble. When the Mcclendon's opened the door of their Hammond home, police believe the suspects pulled a gun and forced their way in. In the probable cause affidavit, one of the suspects told detectives they beat the couple. Then stole money, jewelry and other property, and tied up the McClendons. One suspect says they later returned with a "third person" to "finish" the couple.
But police are still trying to gather evidence to prove that last statement.
They tracked the teens getaway in the McClendon's Cadillac. They ran out of gas, court documents reveal, forcing Gregory Brooks, Jr. and Reo Thompson to abandon the stolen car on the Dan Ryan expressway early last Wednesday. Police picked right up on their trail, discovering witnesses who remembered seeing Brooks and Thompson driving around Hammond in the Cadillac.
Another major clue took police in this Hammond, Indiana pawn shop. A witness told investigators that Brooks sold some jewelry here. Jewelry that detectives say was stolen from the home of Waymon & Ruby McClendon. Police say surveillance cameras captured the transaction. That helped draw police even closer to Gregory Brooks and his alleged accomplice Reo Thompson.
Though murder charges have yet to be filed, the Mcclendon family says they feel confident police are on the right track.
