CHICAGO - The City of Chicago and Cook County should see some breaks in the steady snow Tuesday night.

The latest computer model guidance suggests the latest wave of snow should lift north, into far Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin by 11PM. Radar returns confirm this thinking as the precipitation is has ended or tapered to a drizzle over Central Illinois.

In addition, warming aloft will switch some of the snow over to just rain or drizzle at times. This will keep snowfall totals over most of Cook County in check.

Further to the north, the snow may continue well into the night over McHenry and Lake Counties where upper level temperatures are colder. The lone exception to this may be along the immediate lakeshore in Lake County, where the relatively warm waters of Lake Michigan may be enough to periodically change the snow over to rain.

Heavy snow fell Tuesday night northwest of Chicago along the I-90 corridor from just west of Elgin to Rockford.

Roads in McHenry County are reportedly in very bad shape with numerous accidents.

6" of new snow is now on the ground in Harvard, IL.

5.5" has fallen in Woodstock and Rockford.

Power outages were reported in the Belvidere area.

It is unclear at this time what is causing the power outages, but one possibility is lightning from thundersnow.

Here are some of the latest snowfall totals (storm total-since midnight) into the WGN Weather Center as of 7:50PM:

3.3" Elk Grove Village

2.8" Chicago O'Hare

2.5" Downers Grove
