Athlete of the Year

Lukas Verzbicas is the Tribune's Athlete of the Year, but we also considered these candidates. Who would be your 2010-11 Athlete of the Year?

  • Jack Allen, Hinsdale Central: Michigan State football recruit, first-team All-State lineman; Class 3A state champion wrestler at 285 pounds.
  • Kayla Beattie, Woodstock: Class 2A state champion in cross-country and in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs in track; set state records in all three races.
  • Brian Bobek, Fremd: Ohio State football recruit, first-team All-State lineman; fourth in Class 3A state shot put.
  • Peter Bonahoom, Prospect: All-State special mention running back; center fielder for Class 4A third-place baseball team.
  • Ajani Cargle, Lincoln-Way East: Won state championships in the all-around, floor exercise and horizontal bar at the state gymnastics championships to lead team to state title.
  • Sparty Chino, Wheaton Warrenville South: Second on team in tackles for Class 7A champion football team; Class 3A state champion wrestler at 152 pounds.
  • Mari Georgiadis, New Trier: State champion in badminton with 52-0 record; half of doubles team that placed fourth in state tennis tournament.
  • Gage Harrah, Cary-Grove: All-State special mention running back; Class 2A state champion wrestler at 189 pounds.
  • Michelle Mayer, Homewood-Flossmoor: Placed 10th in Class AA state golf; second-leading scorer for water polo state quarterfinalist.
  • Chris Sujka, Mount Carmel: Quarterback for the Class 8A runner-up football team; first-team All-State center fielder for Class 4A fourth-place baseball team.
  • Danny Thomson, Hinsdale Central: Won 200- and 500-yard freestyle at the state swimming championships and set the state-meet record in the 500 free.
  • Lukas Verzbicas, Sandburg: Class 3A state and national cross-country champion; fifth U.S. high school runner in history to break 4 minutes in the mile run.
  • Zach Ziemek, Lake Park: State champion in long jump, triple jump and pole vault to score 30 points and lead Lancers to state team title at the Class 3A track and field meet.
