  1. June 5 primary: The Times' endorsements

For voters in Los Angeles County, the most important decision in the election that culminates June 5 may be in the <a href=&quot;http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/endorsements/la-opinion-da-candidates-vignette-html%2C0%2C6790845.htmlstory">six-candidate race for district attorney</a>. This will be the <a href="http://opinion.latimes.com/opinionla/2012/01/los-angeles-county-district-attorney-election.html">first time since 1964</a> that the race is wide open, with no incumbent. The victor will find himself or herself at the center of issues that continue to make headlines: alleged political corruption, including investigations involving the county <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may/17/local/la-me-0517-assessor-20120517;">assessor</a> elected officials' <a href="http://www.latimes.com/news/local/bell/;">use and misuse of tax revenue;</a> possible unlawful <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may/16/opinion/la-ed-sheriff-baca-20120516">use of force</a> in the jails; troubling evidence of gang-like <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/05/jail-deputies.html">cliques</a> among sheriff's deputies; <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/jan/31/opinion/la-ed-brownact-20120131;">unlawful private meetings;</a> the future of the <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/apr/02/opinion/la-ed-death-penalty-district-attorney-20120402">death penalty</a> and the <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/apr/03/opinion/la-ed-threestrikes-district-attorney-20120403;">three-strikes law;</a> and <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/apr/25/opinion/la-ed-realignment-district-attorney-20120425,">public safety realignment,</a> which will put many convicted felons under the supervision of county rather than state officials. If no candidate wins more than 50% of votes cast, there will be a Nov. 6 runoff between the top two finishers.

  17. Maryland politicians' crime spree

For the past three years, Maryland has experienced an unprecedented crime wave of political corruption. The only comparable period in memory would be the 1970s, when a governor was jailed and a sitting U.S. vice president (who had served as governor and Baltimore County executive) resigned in shame. The current offenders have been high-ranking elected officials, and the offenses have been far more serious than simple lapses in judgment. They have involved a level of hubris and ethical depravity that are shocking by any standard.

  21. Fitzgerald to step down after record nearly 11 years as U.S. attorney

Patrick Fitzgerald will be most remembered for taking down two Illinois governors, but the prosecution of a ruthless ex-Chicago police commander may say more about the outgoing U.S. attorney's style, boldness and willingness to risk a courtroom loss in pursuit of what he felt was right.

  23. Presidential election-year politics could come in play in Fitzgerald replacement process

Picking a successor to Patrick Fitzgerald as Chicago's top federal prosecutor is fraught with difficulties, from finding a lawyer with zeal and talent to take on public corruption to trying to keep any choice from becoming embroiled in presidential election-year politics.
