The school was created in 1963 as Florida Technological University in part to train workers for the booming aeronautical industry orbiting NASA's space center at nearby Cape Canaveral. The school was renamed in 1978 to reflect its expanding role as a broad-based educational hub in an 11-county service area that encompasses Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Volusia, Lake, Citrus, Flagler, Brevard, Levy, Marion and Sumter counties.
UCF's growth beyond its main campus includes 11 regional campuses operated in partnership with several community colleges. The Rosen College of Hospitality Management provides a link to the region's burgeoning tourism industry and is located on Universal Boulevard close to major hotels and world-famous theme parks. Looking ahead, UCF plans to build a medical school on a 50-acre Health Services Campus in Orlando's Lake Nona area, which promises to raise the profile of its biomedical research efforts. The school also is pursuing research in nanoscience, solar energy, optics and lasers, and computer simulation.
