The flagship of the University of Illinois system and the premier public college in the state, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions Congress created in 1862. The campus is in east-central Illinois, 140 miles south of Chicago. There are nearly 31,000 students from all 50 states, but 87 percent are from Illinois. The university has 150 programs of study and more than 5,000 courses.
