The flagship of the University of Illinois system and the premier public college in the state, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions Congress created in 1862. The campus is in east-central Illinois, 140 miles south of Chicago. There are nearly 31,000 students from all 50 states, but 87 percent are from Illinois. A Big Ten school, its sports teams are called the Fighting Illini.
