University of Iowa

The University of Iowa, established in 1847, is a major research university located in Iowa City, Iowa. Enrollment in the fall of 2007 was more than 30,400. It was the first public university in the United States to admit men and women equally and it established the first law school west of the Mississippi River. The university is also well known for the Iowa Writer's Workshop, which was formed in 1936 and has produced 13 Pulitzer Prize winners. The Iowa Hawkeyes compete in the Big Ten conference.
