  1. Chicago's youth fighting food deserts

    Chicago is a city known for its food, but alarmingly 64 out of the 98 communities are in food deserts. A community becomes a food desert when fresh produce isn’t available in a one mile radius, but processed foods are around the corner and thus easily obtainable. Typically food deserts are located in lower income minority neighborhoods throughout the United States and the consequences are significant. Americans without access to fresh produce are often malnourished. They are more likely to suffer from diabetes type II, obesity, cancer, coronary heart disease and stroke than other Americans.
