1. Review: Wes Anderson finds near perfect balance in 'Moonrise Kingdom'

It seems fitting that "Moonrise Kingdom,"arguably Wes Anderson's most grown-up film yet, is a warm and funny fable about kids on the cusp. Here the writer-director's tendency toward the allegorical casts a magical spell with Anderson finding a near...

7. Women on Cannes red carpet -- but not in directors' chairs

World Now
Jane Fonda and Alec Baldwin were there on the red carpet. Marilyn Monroe made an appearance -- if only on a poster. There was even an improbable camel. But one thing was glaringly missing at the Cannes Film Festival as it kicked off Wednesday in a...

You know you’re in for an offensive and funny film when it starts off stating “in loving memory of Kim Jong-il.”

You know you’re in for an offensive and funny film when it starts off stating “in loving memory of Kim Jong-il.” I think Socha Baron Cohen does funny work. I enjoyed Borat and Bruno, although this movie isn’t as funny as those,...

11. Bill Murray talks about a director he likes, Wes Anderson of 'Moonrise Kingdom'

CANNES, France -- Here's Bill Murray, a rumpled riot in mismatched summer wear, talking about his ongoing screen collaboration with writer-director Wes Anderson, the filmmaker (who still shoots on actual, tactile-friendly film, Super 16 millimeter in this case) who gave us "Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums,""Fantastic Mr. Fox"and other fastidiously framed and eccentrically observed studies in young people, their addled elders and their elaborate coping mechanisms:

13. Film review: 'The Avengers' fun movie but won't save the world

Superhero fans have been waiting for "The Avengers" since "Iron Man" in 2008. Since then, all the films featuring Avengers have included hints and references to the characters' upcoming collaboration. Some say what we've gotten is four years of commercials. I say it's been four years of building anticipation. The problem is that the film now has to deliver on four years' worth of hype. It's an OK blockbuster, but the bar is set so high that it can't help but be disappointing.

It was a weekend that made Hollywood stand back and marvel. "The Avengers," from Walt Disney's Marvel Studios, didn't just break the record for the best opening weekend in Hollywood history — the film smashed through it Hulk style, grabbing up big green fistfuls of money.

21. Film review: Joss Whedon brings together 'The Avengers'

If you've seen the predecessors to “The Avengers” — “Iron Man” (2008), the Edward Norton version of “The Incredible Hulk” (2008), “Iron Man 2” (2010), “Thor” (2011) and “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011) — part of the new entry's fun is seeing how each of those films' central characters reacts when demoted from sole hero to just another ingredient in a superhero stew. If you haven't seen them, that particular thrill may be lost, but you can still follow the plot well enough to take a good guess at our heroes' back stories.
