From a doughnut dangled at the end of a fishing pole to a middle finger in the face, Chicago's cops took a lot of grief as they went about the business of keeping the city safe during the NATO summit.

  5. First lady takes guests to 'my backyard'

Away from the clamor of protesters and the glitter of a city dressed up for the NATO summit, first lady Michelle Obama and the spouses of foreign heads of state spent Sunday afternoon on the South Side, less than a mile from the neighborhood where she grew up.

  13. NATO and G-8 summits allow Obama to showcase foreign policy

WASHINGTON — Whatever else they achieve, back-to-back summits of world leaders this weekend hosted by President Obama will showcase the perks of incumbency. 17. From canals to clocks: Famous Chicago conventions

The NATO summit, which opens Sunday with more than 60 heads of state expected to attend, is the most august such gathering in Chicago history. As far as conventions go, though, the number of participants is middling compared with others the city regularly hosts, namely the radiologists and the restaurateurs, who were unceremoniously bounced by NATO. And the impact? Time will tell, but Chicago has been the home to a number of momentous decisions, movements and gatherings. William Host, associate professor of hospitality and tourism at Roosevelt University, who makes a point of knowing such things, offered up these four influential meetings.

  19. Won't you please come to Chicago

They've come to protest war, or to protest the money spent on war, or to protest the cuts in social programs that they blame on the money spent on war. They want a tax on Wall Street, a moratorium on home foreclosures, an end to deportation of undocumented immigrants. Some of them are here to protest the global police oppression they hope to provoke. And then there are the clowns. What are the clowns about?
