Basilica of the Assumption

Baltimore's Basilica of the Assumption -- formally known as Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary -- is on the corner of Cathedral and Mulberry streets and describes itself as America's first cathedral. Construction of the basilica took place from 1806 to 1821. The Basilica of the Assumption has been instrumental in many milestones for the Catholic faith. Three Plenary Councils met at the church and helped shape several monumental decisions, including calling for the evangelization of Native Americans and African-Americans following the Civil War. In 1972 the structure was deemed a National Landmark, and in 1993 the National Conference of Catholic Bishops designated it a National Shrine. Notable visitors to the Basilica include Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa.  « Show less
