The National Aquarium in Baltimore is located at the city's Inner Harbor. Ground was broken in 1978, and the aquarium opened its doors in 1981. Since the Baltimore National Aquarium's opening, it has become a destination for visitors to the Inner Harbor. The aquarium houses more than 10,500 specimens of at least 560 species. In 2005 the aquarium opened an expansion, Animal Planet Australia: Wild Extremes, which is dedicated to animals that inhabit Australia, including crocodiles, turtles, birds and fish. One of the best-known and most attended attractions at the National Aquarium is the dolphin show, which features the aquarium's Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins, along with their trainers, performing tricks and educating spectators about the mammals. The aquarium also has a new 4-D Immersion Theater that combines 3D film with sensory effects including mist and wind.
