Lou Piniella

The feisty manager of the Chicago Cubs came to Chicago in 2007 with the goal of changing the culture of losing that has defined the organization for several decades. A former major-league outfielder who made his reputation with the "Bronx Zoo" edition of the New York Yankees in the 1970s, Piniella will begin the 2008 season with 1,604 wins as manager, ranking 15th on the all-time list. Piniella had a memorable debut season in Chicago, guiding the Cubs to a Central Division championship before they bowed out in three straight games to Arizona in the postseason. After a poor start, the turnaround of the '07 Cubs was traced to a sunny afternoon at Wrigley Field in early June when Piniella was ejected (and eventually suspended) for kicking dirt on an umpire. Piniella has two "Manager of the Year" awards to his credit, and he won a world championship in his first year with Cincinnati in 1990. Known by his nickname "Sweet Lou," Piniella has recently tried to downplay his age-old image as a short-tempered lunatic who fights with umpires and throws bases when a call goes against him. Piniella is signed through the 2009 season, and insists that the Cubs job will be his last before retiring. « Show less

  1. Chicago Cubs lose 4-1 to San Diego Padres

    Tribune reporter
Lou Piniella has finally seen enough. After Kevin Gregg gave up four two-out runs in the ninth inning in a 4-1 loss to the Padres on Monday night, Piniella said he plans on removing Gregg from the closer's role. "I think we're going to make some changes...

  3. Befitting career, Wood leaves lasting memories

Having covered Kerry Wood's first and last pitches in the majors and chronicled his best and worst moments — in simulated games, Cactus League games and playoffs games, through elbow, shoulder, knee, back, blister and hot tub injuries — I'm eager to experience the post-Wood Cubs.

Why can't Carlos Marmol find his arm slot or confidence at Des Moines instead of ruining outstanding jobs by Cubs starting pitchers, as if they don't have enough problems with no offensive support. If I was Ryan Dempster I'd punch Dale Sveum in the nose. Cubs fan since 1934. -- Ray Nepute Atlanta GA

  13. Readers Q&A: Paul Sullivan's Cubs mailbag

Now that the Cubs have been mathematically eliminated from 2012 and 2013 postseason contention, how bare do you see Theo Epstein stripping the Cubs? Is he going to trade everything of value (Matt Garza, Geovany Soto), pay large chunks of salary (Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Marmol) and ask guys to waive no-trade clauses (Ryan Dempster) in the name of restocking the system and starting over? I could understand going that route, but it sure could lead to a (more) embarrassing couple of years. -- Tom D., Oregon, Wis.
